Two former members of California's Oakland Raiders cheer squad have settled a wage theft lawsuit filed against the organization for alleged wage violations. The lawsuit concerned the contracts and payments to the two women, and the outcome of the case may affect up to 90 individuals.
The lawsuit was filed in January 2014. The two cheerleaders state that the Raiders broke several state labor laws. Among them were failure to pay a minimum wage, refusing reimbursements for out-of-pocket business expenses and withholding wages. According to the settlement, the team will pay out a total of $1.25 million to the two cheerleaders at the center of the lawsuit and to 90 other women who have worked for the organization as cheerleaders during the period in question. The two women will each receive an additional $10,000, as well because they brought the lawsuit forward.
Reports show that the legal action pursued against the Raiders has spurred cheerleaders for other squads to attempt similar actions. In addition, the Raiders are reportedly in the process of offering their current squad members new contracts with higher pay rates, expense reimbursement and more frequent paychecks.
Unfair business practices can affect employees in all industries and generally involve issues with fair wages, benefits and employment practices. These issues can affect a worker's morale as well as his or her paycheck. An experienced legal representative can sit down with anyone who feels as though an employer is not fulfilling its duties and determine whether a viable case for compensation exists.
